V-Twin Range Test

I took the prototype V-Twin to the range today. You'll recall that it's set up for SCUBA fill - so I just line fed it from the bench. I designed it as a rear fill so I can just clip on and relax. When out hunting, I'd just sling a Buddy bottle from a shoulder pack.

Because I've computed that my single stage pump option will be able to generate approx. 1,680 psi, I ran the rifle today at that pressure to give you an idea of performance at that level. Remember, this rifle could be turned up and run hotter. However, I think you'll be surprised at what it will do at this level. 25 and 50 yards pretty much shot to the same POI. I've learned a few things to make that possible.

I mounted a nice little Simmons 4X shorty scope on the rifle. Not a target scope ... but a great little hunting scope. It was almost sighted in from the first shot. It didn't take long to start having fun. You see, I had this Sharpie in my pocket and some blocks of wood ...

Ah ha! ... a truly rotten to the core varmint type critter. Been out robbing songbird nests and crapping on my truck no doubt!

OK, we're gonna be shooting round ball. Not the most perfect ammo - but quick, fun, and easy to get.

I measured these and they vary a good bit from a perfect sphere. Measure a few times as you roll them and you get a general range of diameters around what you expected.

Let's try a few shots at our target set out at 25 yards.

Shot one Perfect

and thru.

Shot #2. Bigger ... so you can see it ... that's TWO holes! Yes Sir!!!

And shot 3 @ 25 yards.

And there's all three holes!

the right one is a double.

Loose standing blocks - this one hard treated yellow pine.

Feeling pretty good about that ... I moved on to 50 yards. Posted a paper.

Now, remember, I'm using 4X optics and round ball.

And there's five round ball at 50 yards

That places all five ball within about an inch to an inch and a quarter of the POA @ 50 yards with round ball and 4X scope. A tip here (keep this in mind). I was shooting for the dead center each time. So, review each hole in relation to that - not the the other holes. You've seen me shoot many dozens of cloverleaf groups at 50 yards - so this isn't an excuse. For 4X and round ball, considering that each of the five consecutive shots hit within that approx. 1+"of the dead center @50 yards - you can hunt with that (unless you are after bumblebees ;?)

So I posted this 2 by 8 spruce block. Yes ... I still have some of these left. And, yes ... I did make a bunch of them for the first Standing Stone. (I was gonna demonstrate some - and found I never got the time). OK ... Block at 50 yards. 4X scope. 45 caliber round ball - rifle shooting off of 1,680 psi.

I love it when this happens! ;?) I always take a pic first of the raw target (above) so you can see it's the same one afterwards.

And, I think you'll agree that the rifle shoots pretty hard at this setting. That's about 166 fpe. I'm always surprised at how the slug/ball will just paper punch a free standing block. Before that block can move out of the way, the energy has blasted a hole straight thru it.

I had a fine range session. I really like the rifle alot. For those of you who want a lighter format rifle with a traditional appeal ... and fine handcrafted quality ... this might be the one for you. Thanks for reading.
