Southwest Scout
The receiver area of the latest Scout
45
A nice light weight PCP (7.5 pounds
as shown) - formatted here as a muzzle loader for a customer who
shoots in a Black Powder club and hunts the Southwest.
Brass adjustable machined sights go
with the theme.
Front Ghost Sight. Great for quick
target acquisition - the eye wants to self center objects inside
circles. I've designed this sight to take advantage of that ...
Front and back sights sort of have
that "Spanish Mission - Monument Valley"
profile / feeling too ... don't they?
;?)
Ramrod mounted thru integral hoops
with front barrel clamp and wedding ring stock ring. Note the
"Horizon Plane" built into the rear sight and top of
receiver. Important feature to avoid "canted" aim.
Rear scuff shoe - rear quick fill nipple
Billet machined guard ... three lever
trigger design with tool steel sear and brass trigger.
The chronograph tells us we're gonna
be shooting the 45 caliber round ball @ approx. 800 fps for 200+
fpe with ball - more with slugs.
Let's try our first shots outside the
shop muzzler test device.
Shots 1,2,3 @ 26 yards according to the laser.
And ... nice and straight. This rifle was just
assembled and the handmade sights just machined and installed
last evening.
Obviously ... the adjustment is alittle low.
So, I adjusted it up some and also moved the target back some
- to 43 yards the laser says.
And ... we are still low for 43 yards,
but how's this? Shots 4,5,6 down the barrel, are dead straight
with the 26 yard ones and, using the same POA as the first three,
these are in the same group now. ;?)
(No ... these are not all from the
same reservoir fill.) You'll get about 3 shots in this light butt
reservoir format. Rifle weighs 7.5 pounds as you see it here.
Alot of work to one of these projects.
Here's some of the stock inletting going on ...
And a few of the many, billet machined
parts.
I was baking my brains out there in
the sun so .....
I moved back here in the shade to try
a few off the truck hood...
Here's 10 round ball - ungraded. Brass
sights. Off the truck hood @ 62 yards. I set out a second box
of ball to test - alittle larger diameter - then I forgot and
left them on the bench. However; you can see here, our first trip
to the range shows these ball do pretty well - and I suspect the
next size up will be better. Nice little cloverleaf there of some
ball which were either closer to the same size or my aim/lean
on the hood was better for those few. With a muzzle loader - there's
alot of activity in between shots ya know. So - 9 out of 10 shots
here would have hit a soda can at 62 yards with open sights -
that's not a bad start. The double core of this group covers 1
7/8" wide and 3 3/4" high - or 7.03 sq. in. of area.
A different ball or slug might do even better. I know we've got
a fine rifle here. ;?)
Next Day Now: Went back with that next size ball I'd forgotten yesterday
... and
_
I was right: here's 3 shots at 60 yards
- off the truck hood again. Then, I marked them in the second
pic. Decided to add more shots to the group ...
There's a total of 10 shots @ 60 yards
with open (brass) sights. The spot lower left is a drywall screw
... two top holes are slightly different ball or just my fault
in technique off the truck hood. ;?) So, the core of this group
covers 1 3/16" wide and 1 3/4" tall. That's 2.07 sq.
inch of area - or ... 3.4 times smaller than yesterday!
There's a prespective. Funny - at 60
yards, I could not see any hits. However, I could "Hear"
the ones that went into the core group cause the plywood was splintered
there and it made a softer "thud" sound than the sharper
"TACK" sound of new wood.
So, we're ready to hunt the Southwest
...
And ... speaking of the Southwest ...
our Son and Daughter-in-law, with their two kids, have moved in
for a month between changes of duty station - selling one home
- buying another, moving, etc. And, she's been doing some cooking
for us ..... Tostada!!! ... yummmmm. ;?)
Back to work ...
